'Fire Fighters and Furry Friends' calendar helping save lives at Animal Services
You can now flip the pages of a brand-new calendar and see the faces of local firefighters along with pets waiting to be adopted.
The "Fire Fighters and Furry Friends" calendar of 2019 is out.
It's the third year the calendar has been available to the public.
It began as a collaboration between Animal Services, the El Paso Fire Department and the city manager's office.
"We also recruited an organization called Snaps for Shelter. She's one of our volunteer photographers here. She also began the project with us three years ago," said Michele Anderson, public affairs coordinator with Animal Services.
Proceeds from the calendar go to help shelter pets in El Paso and in providing low cost adoption events. Animal Services main goal is to find forever homes for all animals in the shelter.
"Programs like these, the calendar, stuff like that really helps us do that,” Anderson said.
Calendars can be purchased for $10 through Animal Services at 5001 Fred Wilson or at the fire headquarters downtown at 416 North Stanton on the second floor.
The calendar includes two free pet adoption vouchers.
It also includes a pet alert tag that pet owners can put on a window at home.
“To alert firefighters if you have any pets. That way, in case there is a fire at your home, firefighters know to look for your furry friends,” Anderson said.
The public has responded well to the calendar. Anderson said they’ve sold out for the last few years and only a limited amount is available.
Anderson said they love the idea of not only featuring animals but also the firefighters.
“It raises awareness of the thousands of pets that come into El Paso Animal Services, and it also helps thank the brave men and women that help protect our community every year,” Anderson said.
