Which part of the country is most likely to win the lottery?

A KFOX14 viewer named Ricardo asked me this question: "Why does it seem like most of the lottery winners come from the eastern United States?”.

The winning ticket for the fourth largest jackpot in Mega Millions history was drawn last Friday in New Jersey.

The still-unknown winner of the $533 million jackpot bought the ticket at a convenience store in Riverdale, New Jersey.

In reality, who wins the lottery comes down to the odds, and there are simply a lot more people in the eastern U.S. to improve their odds.

For example, the East Coast has more than twice as many people as the West Coast.

I also found an online article that was posted last summer by that listed the 15 states where people spend the most money on lottery tickets, and all 15 were in the eastern half of the country. The state that was the farthest west on that list was Illinois at No. 15. Most of the rest of the states were on the East Coast. When it comes to the most spent per-person on lottery tickets, Delaware came in third, Rhode Island second and Massachusetts topped the list.

Finally, another report from last year showed the best odds of winning a Powerball lottery jackpot were in the Midwest, with Indiana topping the list, followed by Missouri and Minnesota.
