When will El Paso get a new children's museum?

Rendering of one of the options the new El Paso children's museum will look like

In this Just Ask John, I have a follow-up to a question I first addressed a year ago: "When will a children's museum finally become a reality in El Paso?"

If you've watched KFOX14 news over the past couple of weeks, you may have noticed our stories about three designs for a new children's museum that are the finalists in a contest in which you can vote.

It's now been more than five years since El Paso voters approved bond money for the project. But the $20 million that voters approved back then won't be enough to cover the costs of the children's museum that’s now being envisioned by architects.

The city estimates the building itself will cost $30 million, while it'll take another $30 million to install its various exhibits.

The city-sponsored contest seeking your vote on your favorite design concept ends this Friday, Dec. 15. Here’s the link:

The El Paso Community Foundation is helping to lead the project and expects to break ground on the new children's museum early next year. Its construction is then scheduled to be completed by the fall of 2020.
