Motivation Monday: Hummingbirds

Hummingbirds are enchanting little birds. Their whimsical wings and lightning fast movements lend an air of fantasy to any yard.

In some ways they seem as though they are little fairies. David Duran of the Myers Ace Hardware store in Canutillo said he's gotten to know a lot more about hummingbirds, ever since one set up seasonal residence in the hardware store. And though they are adorable and amusing, hummingbirds are also killers... bug killers.

It turns out these little birds migrate to the United States at a perfect time for those of us who live in the "Borderland" area.

Not only do the hummingbirds come to stay warm and make baby hummingbirds, they come to feast on bugs and mosquitoes. Yes, mosquitoes that plague the Southwest with potential diseases including Zika and West Nile viruses. Having hummingbirds around is not just entertaining but practical.

So in the next segment of "Carpe Diem" we'll explore how to start luring hummingbirds to your yard, and what you need to know to keep them there.
