A new exhibit at the El Paso Museum of Art celebrates the diverse work of a local painter and illustrator.

Born in 1941, Antonio Castro grew up in Ciudad Juarez, Mexico and El Paso, Texas.

Some of his earliest illustrations were commissioned by El Paso's longtime department store, The Popular.

He went on to create beautiful illustrations for books published by Cinco Punto Press in El Paso.

The exhibit at the museum of art also explores his figurative paintings, including a series of self-portraits.

"While they're fantastical, the story behind me, it's a fantastical story, 'Pajaro Verde', it's set in many ways in this location. So I think one of the reasons, one of the things that very exciting about this exhibition, is here we have an artist who has been living and working in El Paso and Ciudad Juarez for many decades and has worked as an illustrator and as a painter, and it really reflects that,” said Kate Green, from the El Paso Museum of Art.

The shows open Saturday at the El Paso Museum of Art. There is a lunch at noon that’s for members of the museum.
