Becoming the Badge: A Rite of Passage
This week the El Paso police recruits take on the mountain.
Now in week 19, the 22nd class is about to make a trek officers before them have made.
From the academy, you can see the top of the Franklin Mountains; today they’re making the climb.
It starts with a strenuous mile run along Scenic Drive and then the real push begins as they run along the side of a sharp, steep mountain.
Once the reach the peak, there is a magnificent view waiting for them: a glimpse of their city below.
The city and these are the streets they are going to protect day and night.
They can see the academy below them. The run is symbolic of where they began, how far they’ve come and where they are headed.
