Update: Lower Valley shooting happened after argument about money
EL PASO, Texas - A 68-year-old man was arrested in connection to the shooting death of a man in the Lower Valley.
Police said they responded to a shots fired call around 1:40 a.m. near the intersection of Duran Place and San Jose Road.
When officers arrived, they heard two gun shots and saw Gabriel Chavez walking away from 46-year-old Carlos Marquez, who was lying on the sidewalk.
According to the arrest affidavit, Chavez said that the two were arguing outside of Chavez's house over money. Chavez went inside of the home to get a get a gun and met Marquez back outside. The document states that Marquez rushed towards the direction of Chavez causing him to fire a single round, hitting the victim. Marquez was lying on his back when Chavez fired another shot. Chavez said that anger coupled with previous altercations caused him to shoot the victim.
Marquez was taken to Del Sol Medical Center and later died from his injuries, police said.
Chavez was charged with murder and was booked into the county jail with bail set at $100,000.
