Portion of I-10 to close Sunday for Border West Expressway project

Major road work throughout the city continues despite the heat, and crews working on the Border West Expressway will be shutting down a good chunk of I-10 Sunday.

The portion of I-10 that will be shut down is between Executive Center Boulevard and the Downtown Exit from 4 a.m. to 2 p.m.

This stretch of interstate will be close, so El Paso Electric workers can adjust or move overhead power and communication lines safely.

Eastbound traffic will exit at Executive and follow the detour to Mesa Street southbound and re-enter I-10 at Franklin Avenue, or Take Paisano drive as another alternate route.

Westbound traffic will exit Downtown and detour North on Mesa Street towards I-10 westbound, or take Paisano Drive to Doniphan Drive as another alternate route.

A majority of major closures for ongoing roadwork are scheduled for Sunday because it is the day of the week with the least amount of traffic or overnight.

The Border West Expressway project is expected to be complete by 2018 and will help complete the south loop around the city between Racetrack Drive through Downtown to the existing Border highway.
