Residents in Socorro will have an easier time getting around this summer, whether they're walking or driving.

Roadwork has been underway for over a year and a half along a three-mile stretch of North Loop Drive in Socorro but the orange barrels and cones are moving out soon.

The North Loop Drive Improvement Project focused on the road between the Loop 375 to Horizon Boulevard.

The Texas Department of Transportation told KFOX14 they expect the project to be complete by July.

Once work is complete the road will go from two to four lanes for east and westbound traffic and there will be new sidewalks and traffic lights in place along the roadway.

Victor Escandon has lived in Socorro since 1982 and told KFOX14 he’s excited for the project to be complete. He has problems walking and relies on an electric wheel chair to get around so the new sidewalks will be a big help.

“It’s been a very long time for them to finish all the work but it’s good for business and good for people walking around. Traffic has picked up a lot and the new roads will make a difference,” he said.

This is one of many major road projects in the county. For updates on this project, other roadwork underway and future projects in the works continue to check and click on the traffic tab.
