Man accused of beating ex-girlfriend tried to elude officers

By: Jesse Martinez
LAS CRUCES, N.M. A Las Cruces man accused of breaking into his ex-girlfriend's apartment and beating her was arrested Saturday.

Police said Stephen Brandon Guthrie broke into the womans apartment on the 1900 block of Solano Drive around 9:30 p.m.

The 26-year-old woman told police Guthrie demanded that she hand over her cellphone.

When she refused, Guthrie allegedly pushed the victim to the floor, got on top of her and punched her face, police said.

Guthrie then grabbed the womans phone and made a threatening call to her male friend, police said.

Officers contacted Guthrie at his home on Alamo Street, but he initially gave police a different name, authorities said.

The man then ran away and tried to elude officers. He was captured after a short foot pursuit, police said.

Guthrie, 28, was charged with one count each of battery against a household member, false imprisonment, breaking and entering, criminal damage to property and resisting or evading an officer.

He was booked into the county jail with bail set at $5,000.
