Popular NFL referee and UTEP Alum Ed Hochuli announces retirement

One of the most recognized game officials in the NFL, who is also a UTEP alum, is retiring after 27 years.

Ed Hochuli joined the league in 1990 and according to ESPN announced his retirement Tuesday.

Hochuli, 67, will serve as an independent consultant to the league, and will be replaced by his son, back judge Shawn Hochuli, ESPN reported.

Hochuli was also a linebacker when he was in college at the University of Texas at El Paso.

Hochuli played for the Miners from 1969-72.

According to UTEP, Hochuli earned All-Western Athletic Conference academic honors and his bachelor’s in government arts and science in 1972. Four years later he received his Juris Doctor from the University of Arizona Law School.

Hochuli officiated at two Super Bowls and five conference championships.
