Sunland Park attempted-kidnapping case turned out to be domestic violence situation

Sunland Park attempted-kidnapping case turned out to be domestic violence situation

An attempted kidnapping that was reported in Sunland Park last week turned out not to be an actual kidnapping but instead a case of domestic violence, and now police are talking about what to do in these situations.

As reported last week, Sunland Park police said a man tried to kidnap a child right in front of his mother. The mother made the kidnapping story up because she was trying to escape a domestic violence situation at home, police said.

Officers said they are now pairing up with local agencies to help the woman find a safer situation.

Police urge anyone who may be a victim of domestic violence to reach out to them.

La Casa Inc., an organization that fights domestic violence in Las Cruces and rural areas in New Mexico, said it also has resources that could help.

“There's options. There’s a safe place where you can come, a place where you’re not going to be judged. It doesn’t matter what you or your family is going through,” said Cecilia Medina Vasquez with La Casa Inc.

The support offered at the facility includes confidential hotlines, a safe shelter and legal advice free of charge.
