Recall Alert

Several major automakers have issued a new series of recalls for defective airbags. Honda issued a recall for more than 1 million cars outfitted with Takata airbags.

In the event of an accident, the airbags can deploy with so much force that the inflator could rupture, sending metal fragments flying toward the car’s occupants. More than a dozen deaths have been linked to the Takata airbags in various models of cars.

Honda’s recall covers 1,286,592 cars from 20 models. The recall includes:

-- 2009-2012 Acura TSX

-- 2011-2012 Acura TSX Wagon

-- 2010-2012 Acura ZDX

-- 2008-2012 Honda Accord

-- 2010-2012 Honda Accord Crosstour

-- 2010-2012 Honda Insight

-- 2009-2012 Honda Fit

-- 2009-2012 Pilot

-- 2007-2011 Honda CR-V

-- 2012 Honda FCX Clarity

-- 2006-2011 Honda Civic

-- 2006-2011 Civic Hybrid

-- 2006-2011 Civic NGV

-- 2005-2006 Acura MDX

-- 2005-2006 Honda CR-V

-- 2005-2011 Honda Element

-- 2005-2012 Acura RL

-- 2006-2012 Honda Ridgeline

-- 2007-2008 Honda Fit

-- 2005-2008 Honda Pilot

The numbers associated with this recall are KD9, KE0, KE1 and KE2. Honda will notify owners of the defect and dealers will replace the airbags free of charge once repair parts are available. Customers with questions can contact Honda’s customer service at 888-234-2138.

Meanwhile, Ford Motor Co. is recalling 654,695 cars over the same issue with the airbags. The following models are affected by this recall:

-- 2009 Ford Ranger

-- 2009 Edge

-- 2009 Fusion

-- 2009 Mustang

-- 2009 Lincoln MKX

-- 2009 Lincoln MKZ

-- 2009 Lincoln Zephyr

-- 2009 Mercury Milan

The repair parts are not ready for this recall yet. However, Ford will sent out a letter to owners notifying them of the recall beginning Feb. 27. Owners will receive a second notice when repair parts are ready. Customers with questions can contact the automaker at 866-436-7332. Ford’s number for this recall is 17S01.

Toyota Motors is also issuing a recall over the defective airbags. This recall affects 543,326 cars. The following models are affected:

-- 2012 Sienna

-- 2012 Yaris

-- 2012 Scion xB

-- 2012 Lexus ES350

-- 2012 Lexus GX460

-- 2012 Lexus IS-F

-- 2012 Lexus IS250

-- 2012 Lexus IS350

-- 2012 Lexus S250C

-- 2012 Lexus IS350C

-- 2012 Lexus Lexus LFA

Toyota will begin sending out letters to owners explaining the recall on Jan. 30. However, the repair parts are not ready yet. Owners with questions can contact the automaker at 800-331-4331.

Finally, Nissan North America has issued a recall for 152,554 cars for the same airbag issue.

The following models are affected by this recall:

-- 2012 Nissan Versa hatchbacks
