Victims of charity baseball shooting expected to recover
WASHINGTON (Sinclair Broadcast Group) - A shooting in Alexandria, Virginia at a charity baseball practice left at least five people injured, including a top GOP Congressman.
Here is a list of everyone who was injured. All victims are expected to recover, according to police.
The shooter was identified as James. T. Hodgkinson of Illinois, according to law enforcement sources.
Rep. Steve Scalise
The third highest ranking House Republican was shot in the hip by a man with a rifle. According to a statement released by Scalise's office, the Congressman was transported to MedStar Washington Hospital Center and is out of surgery as of publication. He is currently in critical condition, according to the hospital.
Rep. Mo Brooks, a Congressman representing Alabama's 5th District, witnessed the shooting and told CNN that Scalise was on second base screaming. Brooks witnessed Scalise drag himself 15 yards away from second base before having his wound applied with pressure.
2 Capitol Police officers
A male and female officer were wounded in the incident. The male officer shot the suspect bringing the shooting to an end. The officers were there to protect Scalise while he practiced for Thursday night's Congressional baseball game at Nationals Park. They are both being treated at a local hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
Rep. Paul Ryan identified the two officers during an address to members of the House as Special Agent David Bailey and Special Agent Krystal Griner.
Barth is a legislative correspondent in Rep. Roger Williams' office. The representative confirmed his shooting on Twitter and Barth himself posted confirmation of being shot on Facebook.
Barth told his followers, "I got shot this morning at the baseball fields but I am in the hospital and okay. Thank you for the thoughts and prayers." The representative said that Barth is receiving medical attention but is expected to make a full recovery.
Barth is an Astros fan who used to work for Jeb Bush's campaign as an intern and campus coordinator. The University of Texas alum has served under Rep. Roger Williams since September 2016, according to his LinkedIn page.
Tyson Foods has confirmed to KATV News their employee Matt Mika was among those shot. The company says Mika has been working with them for six years. Mika's family says the lobbyist was shot multiple times.
In a statement, Tyson Foods said "We have confirmed that Matt Mika, director-government relations for our Washington, D.C. office, is among those who was shot this morning in Alexandria. He has been taken to a local hospital and we’re awaiting word on his condition. Matt has worked for Tyson Foods for more than six years and we’re deeply concerned about him and his family."
According to Mika's LinkedIn page, Mika serves as the director of government relations and handles state and federal issues involving Tyson Foods. The Western Michigan University alum also deals with issues related to the Farm Bill and the Committees on Agriculture.
Mika's family is en route to Washington, D.C. and has released the following statement.
