Girlfriend shoots and accidentally kills boyfriend for YouTube prank
HALSTAD, Minn. (WKRC) - A Minnesota couple's prank idea for a viral YouTube video turned tragic Monday night, according to KSFY.
Monalisa Perez, 20, and Pedro Ruiz, 22, were hoping to boost their YouTube following when they decided to have Perez fire a 50 caliber handgun at Ruiz while he used a book in an attempt to stop the bullet.
Police were called for reports of a shooting around 6:30 p.m. Medics performed chest compressions on Ruiz and a helicopter was called, but he was later pronounced dead at the scene.
"He had told me about an idea. I said, don't do it, don't do it. Why are you going to use a gun? Why? Because we want more viewers," Ruiz's aunt Claudia said.
The couple even said they tested the stunt already.
"I don't know why they thought the book was supposed to stop the bullet," Claudia Ruiz said.
Perez was charged with reckless discharge of a firearm. The couple already had one child together and Perez is currently seven months pregnant with their second.
"The fact that she has got to live with this for the rest of her life, that alone, is a charge to me," said Claudia Ruiz.
