People in Far East El Paso County are getting a better look at what the future of road construction will look like in their community.

Construction is already a common sight in Horizon and Far East El Paso and it’ll continue to be so for the next two years.

Four major projects are set to start soon so community members are getting to learn more about how this will impact their daily life as well as give their own input.

“All these projects are going to begin relatively soon and we’re going to have a big impact on folks daily commutes so the county wanted to ensure that residents knew what to expect and had as much information about each project as possible,” said Jose Landeros, senior policy adviser for county commissioner Vince Perez.

Eastlake Boulevard, Pelicano Drive, Mission Ridge Boulevard and Darrington Road are going to be widened and improved in the next couple of years.

On Wednesday night hundreds of people from Horizon City and Far East El Paso County attended a community meeting about the project to find out more about starts dates and possible impact to their everyday lives.

“All of these streets are affecting where I live so if any of those closures affect how we get out of the house there’s no other road other than these three streets,” said Janette Rodriguez , who lives in the county.

The four projects will overlap at some point.

The county told KFOX14 it is trying to have minimal impact on traffic throughout the next few years.

“If we have the opportunity to add new lanes in unimproved shoulders which are just dirt at the moment we begin construction there and focus construction in those areas before we actually have to start closing lanes on the roads,” Landeros said.

“I know that’s part of the growing pains of living in Horizon. We are kind of on the edge of El Paso and it’s slowly starting leaking over and I know it’s something I’m going to have to live with for some time,” said Horizon resident Anabel Enriquez.

People at the meeting told KFOX14 hearing about the construction well ahead of time was very beneficial to the community.

“Knowing that our voices are being heard and that they want to present it to us -- it’s not just they’re going to do it without considering everyone,” Rodriguez said.
