TXDOT seeks solution to major congestion at busy eastside intersection

The Texas Department of Transportation is looking for solutions to fix one of eastside’s busiest and congested intersections, Montwood Drive at Zaragoza Road and Joe Battle Boulevard.

Crews are expected to test some areas of pavement in the intersection on Friday.

TXDOT told KFOX14 that the testing is a primary step for a proposed plan in the works focused on improving the intersection.

"We have a planned project to ‘straighten’ out Zaragoza so it doesn’t steer people onto Montwood, but it is a long process," TXDOT spokeswoman Jennifer Wright said.

The curve of Zaragoza Road onto Montwood Drive causes traffic jams in the area.

TXDOT discussed other details being considered for the project.

The purpose of the project is to provide connectivity with the extension of Zaragoza Road between Loop 375 and Montwood Drive and provide additional capacity along Montwood Drive, with widening from two to three lanes in each direction, between Firehouse Drive and Sun Fire Boulevard.

Improvements also include illumination, bicycle lanes and sidewalks within the project limits. The project is located on both existing right-of-way and approximately 3 acres of new right-of-way. The project will add capacity, improve bicycle and pedestrian access in the area through the addition of bike lanes and sidewalks and improve connectivity and operations at the Zaragoza Road/Montwood Drive/Loop 375 interchange, Wright said.

TXDOT said it is a basic outline. The project will take a few years to finalize and start as the agency seeks funding and applies to acquire the additional right-of-way.

As testing begins, drivers are advised to watch out for closures on Friday.

There will be a southbound closure on Joe Battle between Lyman Dotton Circle and Montwood Drive from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Alternate eastbound and westbound right lane closures on Montwood Drive between Joe Battle Boulevard and Firehouse Drive are scheduled near Montwood High School and Helen Ball Elementary School.

There will be alternate lane closures in the northbound and southbound right lanes on Zaragoza Road between Montwood Drive and continuing on a small portion of Montwood Drive.

The closures will cause delays in the intersection.
