Sunland Park man faces multiple child sexual assault charges

Jaime Carrillo was charged with three counts of criminal sexual penetration of a child under the age of 13 and six counts of criminal contact of a child under the age of 13.

According to court documents, Jaime Carrillo, 53, is accused of sexually assaulting an 11-year-old girl multiple times over the course of several months.

Police started an investigation after the girl talked to her school counselor, who then called the police.

Documents say Carrillo would touch the girl even after she told him to stop. They also say Carrillo made the young girl have sex with him and touched the girl inappropriately several times between Thanksgiving and April.

Carrillo denied all the accusations to police and said it's all a lie.

La Pinon, an advocacy center sex assault victim, said there are some warning signs a child might show if they've been abused.

"If they're not comfortable going to someone's house that they used to be, or being with someone, spending time with someone, they enjoyed it before and now they're hesitant to go, or don't want to go, talk to them about what's going on," said Donna Richmond, with La Pinon in Las Cruces.

Richmond said it's up to parents and adults to keep a close eye on children to keep them safe from pedophiles.

"We as parents know our children's behavior that alerts us that something's maybe going on," she said. "Just take the time to talk to your children. A pedophile is a smart person and they are trying to manipulate the situation to satisfy their own desires, and we need to be keenly aware of our children and where they are and what's going on."

Richmond also said it's rare that a pedophile has only victimized one child.

"If a pedophile is victimizing a child, it's usually not just one child," she said. "There's other children that are being victimized also. I think that it happens all the time in our area, and it's fortunate that these children have come forward and disclosed what's going on so the abuse can stop."
