On Sunday, a team of fire crews put out a fire that broke out at a recycling plant.

It all happened on Riley Way near the Texas and New Mexico border just off highway 54.

A team of five fire departments worked together to to put out the fire at around 3:30 p.m.

Otero County Sheriff’s Office said the fire began around 12:00 p.m.

That’s when neighbors say they saw smoke from the fire billowing into the sky.

The Sheriff’s Office said the fire totaled the recycling plant that stored plastic, wood and tires.

A nearby mobile home had to be evacuated but no one was hurt.

KFOX14 spoke with Juan Hernandez who has a business near where the fire started.

He said there are usually a few people in the recycling center about two days out of the week.

“We’re hoping that nobody got hurt, and we definitely want to thank all the different departments that are here. My business is right across the street, and they’re taking care of the fire,” Hernandez said.

Hernandez says he checked to make sure it wasn’t his business that caught fire.

"I have a friend, a neighbor across the street call me and he said hey there's a business next to yours on fire so I immediately came down,” Hernandez said.

Cheyenne Weinberg lives near just off of Riley Way and said she could see the smoke from her bedroom window.

"From my window I can see it, I saw it clearly through my window. I thought someone was just burning some weeds,” Weinberg said

Authorities; said the cause of the fire hasn’t been determined, and the investigation is ongoing.
