Lubbock Police Chief Greg Stevens said Officer East went to Texas Tech in Lubbock after attending a regional academy. He was there to do his field training.

Chief Stevens said East's family wasn't living there with him because he was about to transfer to the Texas Tech campus in El Paso.

In a press conference on Thursday, Chief Stevens also gave an update on the investigation into Monday's shooting.

He said Daniels was searched, but didn't explain how he managed to get a weapon at the police station.

"Unfortunately, he was able to gain access to a weapon and he shouldn't have been. However, he did. That's being reviewed by the Texas Tech Police Department," Stevens said.

Daniels was caught two hours later, police said. He's now facing murder charges.

Officer East is survived by a wife and two daughters.
