New generation of local athletes hope to build UTEP football up next season

UTEP football is getting some homegrown talent on the team next season.

Several senior varsity high school football players signed their letters of intent on Wednesday, pledging to join the Miners.

There was a lot of anticipation at Americas High School on Wednesday afternoon as not one, but two, players officially joined the UTEP football team.

Both Mike Muñoz and Josh Fields will be joining the Miners.

Fields' announcement came as a big surprise as he had several schools to choose from.

Fields is one of the best running backs in Texas.

The two athletes said they hope to work hard to make the team better and bring home more wins.

Ultimately, they say they want to make the Borderland proud and put it on the map through UTEP football.

Following Aaron Jones's decision to leave UTEP to join the NFL draft, both Muñoz and Fields tell KFOX14 they want to follow in his legacy.

"[Jones] just told me to go out there and work hard. The rest will fall into place," Fields said.

"It means everything because I'm here to support my hometown and I want to show everyone that El Paso is actually the best city in Texas for football," Muñoz said.
