More than 300 pounds of marijuana were found hidden in PVC pipes stashed in the roof of a tractor trailer trying to cross into El Paso, officials said.

The seizure was made when a tractor-trailer hauling a shipment of charcoal from Mexico to the U.S. entered the Ysleta cargo facility around 10:20 a.m. Wednesday.

A drug-sniffing dog alerted U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers to the vehicle.

Officers removed several PVC pipes that were cut to fit into the ceiling area, and they removed 374 bundles of marijuana.

No arrests were made, officials said.

“This seizure was unlike most,” said Severiano Solis, acting CBP El Paso port director. “Smugglers worked hard to conceal this shipment, employing several layers of concealment in an unsuccessful attempt to defeat the layers of enforcement CBP employs.”

In separate incidents, CBP officers working at an El Paso port of entry seized 125 pounds of marijuana, 96 pounds of liquid methamphetamine and 12.5 pounds of heroin on Wednesday.
