Carolina Recreation Center and Park in the Lower Valley was renamed to 'Officer David Ortiz Park' on Wednesday.

City Council Representative Lily Limón and the City of El Paso Parks Department hosted the ceremony early Wednesday morning.

Officer Ortiz graduated from Ysleta High School in 1989. He served with the El Paso Police Department for nine years, assigned to the Pebble Hills Regional Command Center. He had also previously served with the Horizon and Socorro Police Department.

Officer Ortiz was 45 years old when he was killed on March 10, 2016, when his motorcycle was struck.

Officer Ortiz's family worked with the city to make the renaming possible.
