Las Cruces father charged with child abuse after loaded gun found in toddler's car seat

Thomas Adrian Brown was arrested after officers found a loaded gun in his child's car seat during a traffic stop.

A man was arrested after officers found a loaded handgun in his child’s car seat.

Thomas Adrian Brown, 22, was pulled over on the 1800 block of Sexton street on Wednesday for failing to maintain traffic lanes, police said.

Before Brown stopped, officers saw that he was moving around in his seat and ducked down several times, according to a spokesperson for the Las Cruces Police Department.

Once Brown stopped, officers discovered he did not have a valid driver’s license, insurance or registration for the vehicle.

The officer was asked to exit the vehicle so he could call for a ride since his vehicle was going to be towed.

Brown’s 1-year-old son was in his car seat in the back seat.

When a relative took the baby out of the car seat, officers say a fully-loaded 9mm handgun fell from the toddler’s seat, police said.

The handgun did not belong to the relative and it is believed that Brown put the gun in the child’s car seat before he stopped the vehicle.

Officers obtained Brown’s criminal history which include a felony conviction in 2015.

In New Mexico, it is illegal to receive, transport or possess a firearm for 10 years following service of a felony conviction.

Brown was charged with child abuse and possession of a firearm by a felon. He was booked into the Dona Ana County Detention Center, where he is initially being held without bond.
