The family of John B. Oblinger Jr., a former Fort Bliss commanding general, says his funeral service and burial will be Jan. 9.

Oblinger died of a heart condition Dec. 26 at the age of 85.

Mark Oblinger, the retired general’s son, said Monday a service will be held at Fort Bliss National Cemetery at 12:30 p.m. followed by a burial at 2 p.m.

Instead of donations, his family is asking for people to make a donation to the Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s or American Heart foundations in Oblinger's honor.

Besides his son Mark, he is survived by his wife Edy, son Michael, grandchildren Kyle and Claire, and daughters-in-law Linda and Susan.
