Former Fort Bliss commanding general laid to rest
FORT BLISS, Texas – —
Former Fort Bliss Commanding Gen. John Oblinger was laid to rest Monday afternoon.
Oblinger died of a heart condition Dec. 26 at the age of 85.
Oblinger’s service will be held at Fort Bliss National Cemetery at 12:30 p.m. followed by the burial at 2 p.m.
Instead of flower donations, his family asked that people donate to a foundation for Parkinson’s disease or Alzheimer’s disease or to the American Heart Foundation in Oblinger’s honor.
Oblinger is survived by his wife, Edith, sons Mark and Michael, grandchildren Kyle and Claire and daughters-in-law Linda and Susan.
His wife said one of the things people will remember most about her husband is his kindness.
"The way he treated his soldiers is probably the most lasting. He was so kind to them," she said.
Son Mark said he is grateful for the outpouring of love for his father during the burial service.
"I was really impressed with the ceremony. It thought it was really well done, such great respect. It was so nice to see the community come out and support my dad," Mark said.
Son Michael said they have fond memories of their dad. "He taught us how to love our country. He was just a great dad."
