Another popular store is closing at Sunland Park Mall.

Forever 21 has moved out of the westside mall, following the closures of other big name stores such as American Eagle and Macy’s.

Just last week, it was announced that El Paso icon Starr Western Wear would be going up where Macy’s used to be. The third El Paso location is scheduled to open this summer and will be the biggest of the three stores.

The recent closures have some locals taking their cash to competing malls around town.

“I feel like there is more to offer at the other malls and they are, like, newer, too. They have more stores,” Victor Casas said.

"For people that are coming across the border to shop I think it's quicker and more convenient to go to Cielo Vista than it is to drive to Sunland park and we just don't have the population that they do mid-town. We also don't have the traffic they have so we need a good store to drive traffic to Sunland

Park and we just don't have it," said Steve Russell.

Currently, the two big department stores still standing at Sunland Park Mall are Dillard’s and Sears.

Some who like to stay in west El Paso to shop feel that it is necessary for the mall to stay afloat.

“I think it is important for the west side to have a place like that. Traffic is getting worse and it would be great to have a place to shop that is nearby,” said Russell.

We’ve reached out to Sunland Park Mall officials to ask what will go in place of Forever 21, but haven’t received a response.
