Family of teen killed in church carnival ride accident files lawsuit against diocese

Samantha Aguilar was killed after being ejected from the Sizzler ride at the St. Thomas Aquinas carnival.

The Catholic Diocese of El Paso is being sued by the family of a teen who was killed in a carnival ride accident last year.

Samantha Aguilar, 16, died after being thrown from the Sizzler ride at the St. Thomas Aquinas carnival on April 29, 2016.

Attorneys for both the family and the church said during a hearing Thursday that they would need anywhere from six months to a year to prepare for the trial.

The attorneys are set to meet with the judge in two weeks.

Two other teens were on the ride when the incident happened. One was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, while the other was not injured.

Aguilar’s father spoke with KFOX14 last year saying the teens were the only ones on the ride, and his daughter had hooked her arms on the handle bar and held on.

The Sizzler is a ride that spins people around a center point but also spins them in their seats.

KFOX14 previously reported that city records showed the carnival did not have the proper permits.

If the carnival has rides, an amusement ride permit is required.

Both of those permits were missing from the St. Thomas Aquinas Carnival record.
