EP County DA open to idea of Uber promo codes for 'don't drink and drive' promotions

St. Patrick's Day may have El Paso County looking at different options for "don't drink and drive" promotions.

The El Paso County District Attorney's Office said it's open to copying a technique the Dona Ana County District Attorney's Office uses to avoid drunken drivers.

On big drinking holidays such as St. Patrick's Day, the Dona Ana County district attorney uses Uber promo codes for new users to get $15 off on their first ride.

The El Paso County district attorney, however, does not do that.

"That's a great idea. It would help promote Uber while people are getting home safe," said Ale Jimenez, who lives in El Paso.

A spokesperson for the Dona Ana County District Attorney's Office said the county doesn't spend any money on the Uber promo codes.

The spokesperson said Uber gets new people for the app on days such as this and for every new user Uber gets, it will donate $5 back to the county for its "Shattered Lives" program.

KFOX14 spoke with the El Paso County District Attorney's Office about this idea and it said it is open to trying it.

A spokesperson for the office said it will need to look further into the idea and try coordinating with Uber in order for that to happen.

The city of El Paso offers free taxicab rides as an option for people who do not want to drink and drive.
