Eastside drivers prepare for start of Airway/Viscount ramp improvements

When completed, the Airway and Viscount ramp improvement project will ease traffic congestion near the Fountains at Farah and Cielo Vista Mall.

A major Texas Department of Transportation project is set to start Tuesday.

When completed, the Airway and Viscount ramp improvement project will ease traffic congestion near the Fountains at Farah and Cielo Vista Mall.

Now, drivers in the area are preparing for increased construction activity.

Traffic along the two shopping malls can get pretty backed up during rush hour.

The ramp improvements will ease that congestion by adding braided ramps so traffic can merge more easily.

But with construction starting this week, drivers will have to watch out for some closures.

I-10 east will be closed from the airway overpass to the Viscount overpass from 9 p.m. Tuesday to 5 a.m.Wednesday.

The Airway and Hawkins entrance ramps and the Hunter exit ramp will be closed as well.

Crews will start putting up concrete barriers in the area.

TxDOT says project's impact on traffic will be minimal but people told KFOX14 they're not too sure about that.

“Every time I try to get out of I-10, it gets pretty packed so I think with the construction it’s just going to bring more problems,” East El Paso resident Cilayn Alba said.

The $16 million project is expected to be completed in November.
