Lizarraga defeats Cormell in District 8 runoff election
EL PASO, TX (KFOX14) —
Cissy Lizarraga will be the new representative for District 8 in the City of El Paso.
Lizarraga defeated businessman Robert Cormell in Saturday's runoff election, according to final unofficial results released by the El Paso County Elections Department.
Early voting results showed Cormell with a slight lead, however, Lizarraga won the tight race by 356 votes.
"We have such a diverse district and I'm ready to serve all of District 8 with equity and balance," Lizarraga said. "I plan to meet with the staff that are currently in place in District 8 and see what concerns they have and what their number one priority should be."
Lizarraga said while campaigning, many people in her district told her the roads need to be taken care of. She said that is one of the first issues she plans to tackle in office.
Saturday's election comes after a June special election where none of the four candidates received the simple majority to win.
In June, Cormell received 42.25 percent of votes compared to Lizarraga's 25.25 percent.
Rita Aguilar-Lacey, from West El Paso, said she voted Saturday because she wants to have a voice in her community.
"I feel that El Paso's at a real critical juncture on how to move forward, so it's kind of exciting to be able to cast a ballot," Aguilar-Lacey said. "You've got a voice, so use it."
