Human remains found in on Picacho Ave. in Las Cruces possibly identified
A possible identification of human remains found Monday has been made, according to the Doña Ana Sheriff’s Office.
The remains were taken to the University of New Mexico Office of the Medical Examiner Tuesday.
It could take up to 90 days to confirm the positive identification, and next of kin have yet to be located or notified, authorities said.
Doña Ana sheriff’s spokeswoman Kelly Jameson said two landscape workers who were clearing weeds on the 4500 block of Picacho Avenue near Fairacres Road discovered the remains.
Deputies arrived at the scene around 11:30 a.m.
The remains, which were severely decomposed, were wrapped in a tarp, detectives said.
It appears the remains may have been dumped at the location and there is no information at this time as to how long they'd been there, according to Jameson. The case is being handled as a homicide investigation, the sheriff's office said.
An audit of missing persons in the area is being conducted as part of the investigation.
