A dog was shot and killed by a police officer Tuesday afternoon.

The incident happened in the 700 block of Baca Road.

Dan Trujillo, spokesman for the Las Cruces Police Department, said officers were at the home executing an arrest warrant.

When one of the officers went back to the home to return items that belonged to the person being arrested, a female pit bull terrier got out of a fenced area and attacked the officer, Trujillo said.

The officer fired at least one round at the dog to stop the attack, and killed it.

Trujillo said the officer is being treated for wounds on his left arm and hand.

The dog will be tested for rabies to determine what treatment is best for the officer.

The officer was placed on procedural administrative leave.

Trujillo said the person arrested was taken into custody without incident prior to the dog attack.
