City approves initial steps toward mixed-use urban development in Downtown El Paso

The city is about to venture into interesting waters by potentially starting a new private-public partnership for a mixed-use urban development in Downtown El Paso.

The city voted to accept a proposal by the Meyers Group for the high-rise building.

It would be located at Mills Avenue and Campbell Street in downtown El Paso, and it will include a 1,104-space parking garage, 180-key hotel, 80 apartment units and retail space.

El Paso Mayor Dee Margo had to break the tie on two votes to move forward with the building. Some city reps were concerned about not having enough information about the bids by the construction companies.

Some city councilmembers also had issues with some pages of the proposal being redacted.

Councilmembers said they didn’t have any information from other bids for the project.

Eventually, the city signed off on holding a public hearing for the construction bid for the complex.

City staff told council it would be important not to delay this vote because it would just push back the public hearing and input for the complex.

A time and date for the hearing has not been set.
