Bowie Band fundraising for memorable trip after years of not traveling

The Bowie band practices early every morning during the school week.

A local high-school band director is on a mission to take her students on the trip of a lifetime. The Bowie band has high hopes of performing in "The Most Magical Place On Earth" this spring.

Jasmin Torres, director of the Bowie Band, has not had the opportunity or funds to take her students on a trip to perform out of town.

Torres is graduate from the University of Texas at El Paso and was a part of the Marching Miners while in college. She told KFOX14 she's always had a love for music adding it's important to teach and help young musicians grow. Having the chance to perform out of town is not only a great experience but allows students to learn more and even network.

The band has not traveled for years but Torres is hoping to change that and is hosting various events to raise the funds needed to travel to Disney Land and perform there May 23.

"I've never been able to take them on a trip and that is something that's really important to me this year. I think everyone needs to experience Disney once in their life but for these kids, Disney also offers an educational experience to be able to perform at the park and be able to get clinicked by a Disney music educator," said Torres.

Unlike other local bands, the school does not have a strong booster club to help fundraise and that's why Torres is asking community members and Bowie Alum to donate or attend an event she's hosting Saturday in the high school's main gymnasium.

The fundraiser is a dance cardio workout class from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. admission cost is $5 donation and all proceeds go to the Bowie Band. The class is open to all ages and children 10 years and younger can attend for free.

Torres is not only a band director but dance instructor and will be hosting the class.

The goal is to raise $30,000, so far, through other fundraisers, the band has raised around $10,000.

A total of 40 students will travel including members of the Bowie dance team.

If you'd like to make a donation to the band you can do so at the school. All donations can be turned into the front office. To find out more about the band visit the El Paso Independent School District.
