Update: Man involved in Las Cruces checkpoint shooting dies

The man involved in a shooting with Border Patrol agents at an immigration checkpoint in Las Cruces last month has died, FBI officials announced Friday.

U.S. Custom and Border Protection officials had initially reported that the man was struck by agents but Albuquerque FBI official say the wounds were self inflicted.

Officials say the man approached the primary inspection lane at the checkpoint on April 9, 2017, and was referred to a secondary inspection.

Agents said they heard a gunshot and fired their weapons.

No agents were hurt.

The incident is being investigated by the FBI and U.S. Customs and Border Protection Office of Professional Responsibility.

The FBI El Paso Division Evidence Response Team assisted.

The man will not be identified because no charges were filed.

Some drivers were seen pulling over. She also says extra security and dogs were visible.
