420 Festival patrons warned of police patrols

People who are planning to attend the 420 Festival in Las Cruces are being advised by police to obey the laws.

Police said they will be patrolling the festival grounds Thursday at Young Park.

They said the use and possession of marijuana is illegal in New Mexico except for those who carry a valid medical marijuana card from the state’s Department of Health.

Medical marijuana license holders Are not allowed to have or use cannabis in public, according to the law.

Rules and regulations of the Medical Cannabis Program state, “It is illegal to possess or use medical cannabis in a public vehicle, on school grounds or property, in the workplace of the patient or primary caregiver, or at a public park, recreation center, youth center or other public place.”

It is also illegal to operate a motor vehicle while under the influence of marijuana.

Las Cruces police said they have had several meetings with the organizers of the festival. Signage is to be posted at the park warning patrons about the law.

Police also say they will be patrolling parking lots and surrounding neighborhoods.
