Weekend events happening Dec. 15-17

Every Friday, anchor and reporter, Kelly Anne Beile shares a handful of events taking place throughout the Borderland on the KFOX14 morning news.{ }

With the holiday season in full swing, free Christmas events today are happening regardless of where you are in the Borderland.

Brightwood College located in east El Paso will host Holiday Fest with Santa today from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. The event is free and open to the public. Refreshments like hot cocoa and Christmas cookies will be available at no charge. Attendees may also participate in writing thank you notes to military troops in partnership with Operation Gratitude, participate in a tacky sweater contest, crafts, and and giveaway drawings.

The Mesilla Park Community Church located at 1040 El Paseo Road in Las Cruces will host a free holiday party for the community from 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. today. Alongside a showing of the classic film, "Elf," the public will be offered hot chocolate and popcorn. Santa Claus will also be present for photo opportunities and a craft table will allow families to bring home some holiday cheer.

The 27th annual Greater El Paso Football Showcase takes place Dec. 16. Pre-game festivities start at 12:30 p.m. with kick-off scheduled at 1:05 p.m.

Organizers promise this year's game to be the most exciting yet. Cheerleaders, dancers, bands, trainers and JROTC cadets will perform. Elia Esparza from "The Voice" will also take the field to entertain.

This is the first year the game will not showcase the traditional east versus west high school senior graduates. Instead, the organization held a draft which drew an unexpected crowd of more than 1,200 last month.

Tickets to the event are $8 at the gate.
