Weekend events happening Aug 25-27

The El Paso Fire Department teams up with the Department of Health Medicaid Waiver Program for a free health fair. Firefighters will provide glucose checks and blood pressure screenings. Those who qualify will receive a voucher(s) for future screenings on cervical cancer, colon cancer, immunizations and/or a mammography. Additional specialty groups will be on hand to provide HIV and hepatitis C screenings. A dental group will enroll eligible children for free dental services.

The health fair will be held at Fire House 17, located at 8803 Alameda Dr., from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. on Aug. 26.

As part of the "Celebration of our Mountains" ongoing list of events, a special trail hike is planned at the Franklin Mountains National State Park on Aug. 26. A guide will show attendees how desert organisms avoid typically high daytime temperatures by adapting to a nocturnal way of life. Those interested in attending are encouraged to wear hiking boots and bring a flashlight and camera. The hike is from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. and the group will meet at the gate of the Tom Mays unit of the park. There is a $2 parking fee or you may use your park pass.

McKelligon Canyon will host a kid-friendly movie on an inflatable jumbo screen on Aug. 25. "Movies in the Canyon" is currently in full swing and the next movie to play is "The Secret Life of Pets." The event is free. Refreshments will be available for purchase on site. The doors open one hour before the screening time of 8:15 p.m.
