Police arrested a man suspected of punching his girlfriend and using a butcher knife to threaten the woman.

Shortly after 9 p.m. on Monday, police responded to the 2300 block of Sambrano Avenue.

Investigators said Benjamin Speed, 34, was at his girlfriend’s home, watching their young child, when he got into an argument with the woman. The argument quickly escalated, and Speed punched his girlfriend twice, said police.

Speed is accused of picking up a butcher knife in the kitchen and using it to threaten the woman.

Police said no major injuries were reported, and the woman was finally able to call 911 and leave the apartment.

Speed was booked into the Dona Ana County Detention Center, where he’s being held on a $20,000 bond.
