Scoop on Savings: When's the best time to buy airline tickets?
EL PASO, Texas —
Scoring a cheap airline ticket is every traveler’s dream. But grabbing a good deal takes luck, rather than skill.
Cheapair.com introduced a new tool last year that wants to make it cheaper to buy a ticket.
All you have to do is enter in your information, like where you want to take off from and your destination, and the site will give you a timeline with fares.
It’ll also give you the best times historically to score a cheap ticket.
According to Time Magazine, Cheap Air researchers analyzed 3 million itineraries, finding that the “prime booking window” -- meaning when prices are at their lowest -- is anywhere from 21 to 112 days before a flight.
Researchers also found that fares go up sharply up to two weeks before a flight.
I spoke to Sun Travel Inc. to see if they had any tips or tricks in getting cheaper airfare.
They simply said, “Book in advance.”
The travel agent told me you can’t really pinpoint the best time for a cheap ticket.
But, she did say if you’re flying internationally, it’s best to book at least 21 days in advance, and 14 days if you’re flying domestic.
The lesson with booking flights? Plan ahead!
