When will water return to the Rio Grande?

When will we see water flowing again in the Rio Grande?

Preparations for that have already started, as the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation began releasing water from the Elephant Butte Dam on Monday, March 6.

That water is now filling neighboring Caballo Lake. The Caballo Dam will then start releasing its water into the Rio Grande in about three weeks, on March 31.

A few days after that, we'll notice water once again trickling down the river.

In addition, El Paso Inc. reports that there's good news for Borderland farmers. For the first time in nine years, they should get their full supply of irrigation water for this year's crops. That's thanks to a much larger snowpack this winter in the Rocky Mountains, which feed the Rio Grande.

It's also good news for Borderland communities like El Paso and Las Cruces that depend on getting part of their water supplies from the river.
