Carpe Diem: Dog Halloween

KFOXThumbnail

While many dogs are comfortable in costume and being around Halloween props, there are many aspects of this spooky holiday that can seriously scare dogs.

Glenda Herrin, of Heeling Hounds, says the most important thing you can do for your pet during this time of year is help them process costumes and decorations.

"Let them smell them, and give them treats," she said.Herrin added that although dogs are familiar with your scent and your voice, it doesn't take much to confuse a dog about new and unfamiliar shapes. "To a dog, we are like shape-shifters in a costume,."

To remove any negative association, she suggests you let the dog see you putting on the costume and let them smell it.
