Becoming the Badge: Environmental Exposure

This week, El Paso police recruits get a small taste of the streets as they face defensive drills in the elements.

The recruits spend 80 hours training on the department’s defensive tactics program; it gives them the skills and tools to control a subject in a dangerous situation without using deadly force.

Now, they’re putting it into practice and get to see how it affects the practical side of police work, like the best ways to handle a person while in custody and how to remove an uncooperative driver from their car.

Then, they experience what it will feel like to fight on concrete, in the dark and in the rain.
