Becoming the Badge: Close Encounters

This week the El Paso police recruits are going hands-on.

This week the El Paso police recruits are going hands-on.

The 122nd class is learning how to survive dangerous encounters with their bare hands.

Over the course of the academy, recruits receive 80 hours of training on the department's defensive tactics program. The program was developed by Lew Hicks, a Navy Seal, and tailored to police work.

The program teaches recruits strike points, quick moves and maneuvers they can use to gain compliance and take control of a person trying to fight them when using a weapon isn’t an option.

Instructors are preparing the recruits for close combat situations and giving them the tools to survive an attack.
